My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Jesus Christ

My God, my God, why have you accepted me?

Andrew Peterson

I will add to this later, but I posted so as not to forget. This combination of quotes really floored me last night while driving home and listening to Andrew Peterson.

So now is later.

It is now about a week since I began this post. Despite the time that has passed, my thoughts are still on this “great exchange” that is expressed in the above quotes. Usually I adhere to the adage – “strike while the iron is hot”, but I never tire from considering the One who took my place so I might take His place.

He Was Forsaken

There on the tree, Jesus was left alone. He was nailed on a piece of wood, and lifted up – symbolically rejected by mankind. He came only with love in His heart for His creatures, and “His own received Him not”. They said, “we have no king but Caesar,” and “we will not have this Man to reign over us”. There was no ambivalence in their intentions. No clarification was needed. Jesus was unwanted by the human race.

But as painful as it was to be rejected in this way, it was not to be compared to the deep sting He felt the moment His Father turned His eyes away from His precious Son. In Zechariah, there is a remarkable verse that expresses the Father’s thoughts – “Awake, oh sword, against my shepherd, and against the one that is my fellow.”

This One who was daily the delight of the Father was cut off in an instant. But why?

The answer is a solemn one because of the way it makes us squirm. It is like the feeling the little kid gets when he realizes that it really was him who broke the window when he hit the baseball over the house. The reason the Father forsook the Son is because of OUR sin. Our disobedience toward the God of the universe is what put Jesus Christ on the cursed tree. In order for us to go free and enjoy forgiveness of sins, someone had to die in our place. And not just any death would suffice.

The only sacrifice acceptable in God’s sight was a spotless sacrifice. A lamb without blemish is what God required of His people in the days of old, and this pointed forward to the cross. There was only One who could pay for our sins. And it was Christ, for He was the only sinless Man who ever walked on this earth.

And now we are led to this place of acceptance.

We Are Accepted

There is not much left to say. He died the death that we should have died. He became a curse for us, and we have reaped the benefit of that act of love. It is just like the story of Abraham and Isaac. Abraham obediently followed God’s command to offer up his son as a sacrifice to God. Just when Abraham was positioned to plunge the dagger into Isaac’s chest, God’s voice could be heard “out of heaven”. To Abraham’s delight, God “provided” a replacement for Isaac – a ram caught in the thicket was put in Isaac’s place, and Isaac went free with his life. And so have we.

This only serves to place more emphasis on our cry, “My God, my God, why hast thou accepted me?” It boggles the mind to think that we could ever stand forgiven in God’s eyes. King David shared our puzzlement when he said to God, “Who am I?” It is where every believer stands before God, and it is a blessed place to stand – the place of forgiveness.

Strengthening the Core

CORE: the hard or fibrous central part of certain fruits, such as the apple or pear, containing the seeds; the basic or most important part; the essence; a set of subjects or courses that make up a required portion of a curriculum; the central portion of the earth below the mantle, beginning at a depth of about 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) and probably consisting of iron and nickel. It is made up of a liquid outer core and a solid inner core; the center of an object.

Physical Application

Lately I have struggled with back pain. My chiropractor’s diagnosis is a bulging disc. I have recently come to understand my limitations. In other words, I know of a few activities that will almost certainly bring on the the pain. I have posted these before, but it will be good for me to be redundant only just one or four more times. I should not…

  1. Play basketball
  2. Jog
  3. Ride a roller coaster
  4. Participate in Sumo wrestling

I’m sure there are more that will surface as time goes by.

One remedy that my chiropractor suggests is that I should really focus on strengthening my core. My center. My gut. I do not argue with this.

It has been a long time since I consistently did sit-ups or crunches or anything that would put strain on my abdomen. I’m usually pretty good at avoiding situations where I might have to exert pressure upon these muscles. It’s just not a lot of fun for me. I know this needs to change.

Spiritual Application

I think I can also say that my flesh (or “old man” as the Bible puts it) is pretty talented at avoiding core training. So what is at the core of Biblical understanding? I think it would be helpful to review some of them right now before I talk about training in this area. Don’t you? Nod your head, please.

One

God is eternal and sovereign. He has always been, is now, and will always be, and His purposes cannot be thwarted (I rarely use that word).

Two

God is love. His thoughts and actions have love at their core. He only desires the well-being of each of us.

Three

God is perfect and sinless. He never has an impure thought. He is altogether lovely.

Four

We have sinned, or disobeyed God, and are to be held accountable for this. God says that “the soul that sinneth, it shall die”.

Five

God sent His only Son, Jesus, to bear the punishment for our sin. He said, “without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness”. While on earth, Jesus Christ died and was miraculously resurrected, and appeared to over five hundred people.

Six

We can receive God’s forgiveness by simply believing this message, known as the Gospel, or “good news”.

Seven

Once we are forgiven, we need to only nurture our relationship with Jesus by avoiding sin. And this is only to maintain what the Bible calls fellowship with God. Sin can no longer send us to hell once we have believed. He obtained “eternal salvation” for us.

So how do I strengthen my understanding of the core? It is by reading God’s word, the Bible, by praying, and by getting together with other believers.

These things need to take greater priority in my life just as physical core training should as well.

Life

I feel good. Life is running around inside me like a squirrel.

Quote from “You Can’t Take It With You”

We recently watched an old movie called “You Can’t Take It With You”. We enjoyed the antics, the acting, and the message. There were several allusions to Scripture, and the overall theme really fit in with the title of the movie. But my favorite quote of the movie is above, and came from a Russian dance instructor named Boris.

He played the part of a pretty stoic guy, so this particular part of the movie came as a surprise. Chaos ensued, and he responded with the quote about the squirrel. I laughed so hard at the image this quote placed in my mind, but it also made me think of another quote.

I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

John 10:10

These words were said by the Lord, and it is such a precious promise to those of us who believe.

There are times when I am not a very positive guy (Surprise!), so this promise of abundant life causes my antennae to twitch. The life the Lord refers to is a life much like the thought of the squirrel. It is spiritual energy that controls us. It is contagious, and affects others in an amazing way.

In Jeremiah, the Lord says that Israel forsook Him, the fountain of living waters. This is what we do when we look away from the One who offers abundant life daily.

I know I am quirky. I can find a spiritual application in a silly quotation about a squirrel. That’s just me.

I am challenged to pursue the One who offers this abundant life.

That They Should Be With Him

Quotes, Thoughts of the Christ No Comments »

“And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him…”
Mark 3:14

How beautiful to consider this primary purpose stated among secondaries! Yes, the remaining portion of the verse continues -

“…and that He might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils…”

But unalterably, we have the Lord’s agenda ranked for these He chose as disciples. First, and most significantly…He desired that “they should be with Him”! And with this thought let us continue. Let us focus on select words within the phrase in order to give emphasis to each.

And He ordained twelve, that THEY should be with Him

Who were “they”? They were fishermen and tax collectors – simple men with apparently unimportant lives – until the day they met the Christ of God. They would go on to fulfill the Lord’s work throughout the world. They would preach, and heal sicknesses and cast out demons. But the Lord’s first step for these unlearned men is that they would come with Him and “rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). And we can also become the same as these men. He desires this place for us as well.

And He ordained twelve, that they SHOULD be with Him

This is not the should of obligation, but the should of opportunity. The God who created them had made a way for them to be with Him. How humbling it is to think that He offers us the same! He does not stand with pointing finger scolding us for refusing to come. Rather, He stands with arms open wide waiting for the only appropriate response from those who have been died for. We SHOULD respond.

And He ordained twelve, that they should be WITH Him

Our minds can go back to the first time Man met with the sad fact that a visit with God was impossible. Adam fell from his place of blessedness when he disobeyed God, and a cherubim with a flaming sword was placed at the entrance to the garden. The way into the place where Adam had walked with God in the cool of the day was now barred. His sin had separated him from his Creator. How thankful are we who know the joy of being called unto Him even though we have sinned. How precious a thought it is that God has made a way through the shed blood of His Son to walk with God…that they should be WITH Him!

And He ordained twelve, that they should be with HIM

Now we find ourselves at the pinnacle of our discussion. The very zenith of the faith…HIM! And He ordained twelve, that they should be with HIM! Where else would they want to be than with Him? Their creator, their redeemer, the One who made all things, sustains all things, knows all things. What an amazing paradox that the very creator, the One who spoke everything into existence, would care to call simple folks to be with Him! Astounding!

More than this is the fact that should make us all gasp. The fact is that the God of the universe, Jesus Christ, came to this planet not just to be with us. He came here to die, that we might be with Him forever! In order for us to be near Him, He had to shed the only pure blood in existence. And it is through this blood, that we can be cleansed, so that we might be near Him – for He is holy, and cannot even look upon sin.
